Breast Asymmetry

Procedure

Breast asymmetry is a common finding and is often a result of unequal breast development but can also follow previous breast surgery.  Corrective surgery may involve a single breast or both sides.  The treatment options to improve breast symmetry include the full range of cosmetic breast procedures and, if both sides require treatment, often require a different approach for each breast.  Your consultation will include an assessment of the size and shape of each side and a careful discussion of your goals and preferences to improve symmetry.

Process

The operations to correct breast asymmetry are typically undertaken under a light general anaesthetic with a single overnight stay in hospital, although day case surgery may be an option for some patients. The procedure will be agreed with your consultant in advance and may include breast reduction, breast uplift (mastopexy), breast enlargement (using silicone breast implants or your own fat in the form of fat grafts) or more often, a combination of these techniques.  The skin wounds are closed with fine absorbable sutures.  The resulting scars will depend on the nature of the surgery required.

Aftercare

Following discharge from hospital simple pain killers are usually all that is required.  Depending on the surgery undertaken you may be advised to wear a well fitted sports bra for around six weeks.  Often a week or two away from work is advised and a return to driving may best be deferred for slightly longer.

A follow-up appointment will be arranged by the hospital to see the specialist plastic surgery nurses initially and thereafter a review appointment with your plastic surgeon will be scheduled to ensure all is well and that you are happy with your result.
